Why Look Beyond the Famous Names?
When choosing your destination for your next cycling holiday, you may feel tempted by the names you already know — the ones you recognize from books, movies, and other sources you may have fantasized about.
Famous destinations are popular for very good reasons — but they also tend to be filled with people who can’t wait to tick them off their list. They are not the only options available for a great cycling route and, in fact, the best cycling destinations may be places that many travellers haven’t considered yet.
Lesser-known cycling regions have several advantages:
- quieter roads, offering the chance for peaceful, meditative pedalling away from traffic (and we always make sure to include the best possible itineraries to avoid cars)
- more authentic local culture — as they are not yet widely known to cyclists, they often better appreciate and welcome travellers, showing the true colours of the region with warm, unspoiled hospitality and more chances to experience the local flair
- better value — they can often offer excellent price/value because they are less requested
- less tourism pressure — with fewer people filling their streets and villages, the non-cycling part of the holiday becomes more enjoyable too
- a stronger feeling of discovery and the satisfaction of seeing places you may never have heard of before
This is where our expertise matters: as experienced tour operators, we know where the real gems are. We can offer the best under-the-radar destinations while still guaranteeing full support, route planning, amazing hospitality, and peace of mind — so you can explore freely.

Undiscovered destinations can be better for cycling for a number of reasons. Cycling is the best way to explore places slowly, and these regions reward that style of travel.
You may find:
- quiet countryside roads
- long coastal routes
- historic villages with strong personality and flair, without crowds
- local food traditions, with more chances to enjoy food and culture without it feeling “touristified”
- landscapes that still feel surprising and authentic compared to the famous hotspots
5 Hidden Cycling Regions
From Dutch lakes to cycle paths between the Alps and the lake, Atlantic coastlines, southern vineyards, and Roman walls — here are five destinations showing how diverse and unexpected cycling in Europe can be.
Friesland, Netherlands
The perfect choice for first-time cyclists, Friesland is located in the northeast of Amsterdam. This wonderful region offers a reassuring landscape made of lakes, canals, dikes, meadows, and historic towns.
Our multi-day route based on the Eleven Cities Route connects charming Frisian towns — among them Leeuwarden, the elegant provincial capital, Stavoren, the oldest city in Friesland, and Harlingen, a historic port near the Wadden Sea — through easy cycling along cycle paths and picturesque water landscapes.
It’s a fully flat circular journey with excellent infrastructure, perfect for a first cycling holiday, offering a side of the Netherlands far from the tulip cliché while preserving a strong cultural identity.

Valtellina, Italy
This underrated Alpine valley boasts an incredible position, located between the Alps and Lake Como, and is easily reachable from Milan.
Valtellina — which many travellers may have seen during the Winter Olympics, with its slopes covered in snow and welcoming athletes from all over the world — is also a perfect cycling destination.
Our route follows the valley on the Sentiero Valtellina cycle path, riding alongside the Adda River and near Lake Como through vineyards, orchards, villages, and open Alpine landscapes.
The tour includes Tirano, famous for the Bernina Express railway (perfect to add as an extra day!), Colico, on the shore of Lake Como, and Chiavenna, a serene mountain town on the border with Switzerland.
And the best thing is that it’s a perfect route for beginners, offering a charming Alpine adventure without the need for technical cycling, with incredible food and wine along the way.

Occitanie, France
Located in southern France, stretching from the Mediterranean coast to the foothills of the Pyrenees, Occitanie is a region made for cycling, offering a rich mix of landscapes and experiences.
Its most compelling characteristics?
- Charming historic towns and canal-side villages
- waterside landscapes
- incredible food and wine — Occitanie vineyards are the largest in France
- a sunny climate
- a quiet, peaceful atmosphere worthy of every French dream you may have
We offer trips along the Canal du Midi, one of Europe’s most incredible waterways, with cities such as Toulouse and Carcassonne and their iconic medieval and southern French atmosphere.
For those looking to go further, there’s the Canal des Deux Mers — an extended route that combines the Canal du Midi with the canal network starting from the Atlantic. This coast-to-coast journey takes you from Bordeaux to Sète, crossing diverse landscapes and some of France’s most celebrated wine regions.
Two distinct ways to experience a region that feels both authentic and refreshingly different.

Cantabria, Northern Spain
Cycling in Cantabria opens up a greener, cooler, and unexpected side of Spain.
The region is located between the Atlantic coast and inland valleys, through vineyards, historic villages, and river landscapes.
Our cycling tour takes you along the Ebro River and through the wine landscapes of La Rioja, on quiet rural roads and through tiny villages to explore, in an ever-changing scenery made of high meadows, quiet forests, dramatic gorges, and wide river valleys.
You’ll see Romanesque architecture, cave churches, and fairytale villages, and taste some of the best flavours in Spain — cured meats, fresh fish, mountain stew, and a great variety of local delicacies.

Hadrian’s Wall, United Kingdom
Cycling through history: this fascinating route in northern England follows the corridor of the Roman frontier built under Emperor Hadrian nearly two thousand years ago to mark the northern edge of the Roman Empire, and it feels like travelling through layers of history.
Picture rolling open countryside, vast moorland, villages, castles, and Roman archaeological sites: an incredible adventure starting from the west coast and crossing the beautiful northern landscapes, with many chances to stop, enjoy the great local pub culture and hospitality, or soak in the out-of-time atmosphere shaped over two thousand years.
This trip is a coast-to-coast achievement through quiet roads, the green landscape of the Eden Valley, and the Solway Coast, an official Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
On some days, rides are shorter to allow you to explore the incredible historical and cultural heritage of the region, from Vindolanda to Northumberland National Park.
